Abstract. This study examined the methods and approaches of Russian scholars to sustainability assessment of regional economic systems, ranked studies by parameters, drew conclusions, and suggested recommendations aimed at sustainability assessment of regional economic systems. These conclusions allow us to review and analyze the domestic experience of scholars and draw conclusions about the state of sustainability assessment of regional economic systems. The conclusion is that current assessments of the sustainability of regional economic systems are not standardized and are diverse and multifold. Many Russian scholars consider sustainability assessment of the system as a whole. In our opinion, it is necessary to analyze individual areas in the sustainability assessment to identify problems and respond to them. Sustainability assessment of regional economic systems allows us to predict system behavior and make appropriate decisions for managing regional economic systems. Decisions based on objective assessments help preserve and maintain the sustainability of a regional economic system, develop it, and improve it. The development of the system depends on the use of high-quality data obtained using objective methods for sustainability assessment of regional economic systems. In Russian practice, various methods and approaches were developed and used to examine comprehensively and assess the sustainability of regional economic systems. Combining the expertise of various scholars will allow us to develop the most objective methodology for sustainability assessment of regional economic systems. This study will also propose a platform-strategic approach to assessing the sustainability of a regional economic system and substantiate its application. Authors’ contributions. S.G. Pyankova reviewed the literature, approaches, and methods on sustainability improvement of regional economic systems and analyzed the polarity of studies on the sustainability of regional economic systems; E.A. Bikbov proposed a platform-strategic approach to analyzing the sustainability of regional economic systems and proposed indicators for environmental component analysis of regional economic systems.
