Abstract. The article analyzes modern features of production and consumption of food products in the world, in Russia, in a number of subjects of the Southern Federal District and in the Volgograd region. The role of common and organic food products, their export and internal potential as a growth factor of sustainability growth of the agriculture is determined. The research uses the general provisions of the economic theory reflecting the laws of the market economy. It also uses the system, institutional approaches, and also it is characterized by a combined use of theories of consumer behaviour, balanced development and regionalistics. The authors specifically emphasize that in the conditions of heterogeneity of saturation of demand for various foods a simultaneous existence of groups of the population suffering from malnutrition and excess weight in order to increase the sustainable development of the agriculture it is necessary to produce both usual and also organic food staff. This implies the introduction of measures of various state supports of producers and consumers, advertisement of the use of ecological technologies and a healthy way of life. It is shown that the sustainability of the agricultural development provided by the presence of effective demand for agricultural production implies the redirection of the volumes of production for export, supplies into the regions of Russia and also the provision of regional food security. This implies the creation of the conditions for a gradual transfer to a technology intensive regional Foodnet market. The authors analyzed the markets of the regions of the Southern federal district (without Sevastopol and the republic of Crimea) from the point of view of the consumption of agricultural products. The food types for which it is reasonable to transfer to an organic production are defined. It is founded that a transfer to the production of organic food staff will take place first in the most fully completed positions of goods. At the same time the key problem remains the task of the creation of a favourable institutional, infrastructural and financial environment, providing the production accessibility of organic technologies for agrarians and organic products for consumers.
Key words: sustainable development of agrarian and industrial complex, organic food, Foodnet, Southern Federal District, export of food, consumer behavior.
