Abstract. The article deals with the integration of the Republic of Crimea into the economy of the Russian Federation, and assesses social and economic development. It is revealed on the basis of a comparative analysis of the aggregate of indicators for the regions of Russia and the Southern Federal District that intensive state financing of the Republic of Crimea contributes to the significant growth of individual indicators such as gross regional product, investment in fixed capital per capita, etc. However, indicators for the Republic of Crimea are the lowest in comparison with other Russian regions, which indicates a low level of economic development integrable region. The current situation has a negative impact on the social sphere, which is also confirmed by the results of the analysis. The results of the research show that in the modern conditions the Republic of Crimea is developing ambiguously. The interregional differentiation of the socio-economic development of the Southern Federal District has been strengthened, which indicates the insufficient effectiveness of the strategic regulation mechanisms aimed at achieving a balanced regional development and raising the living standards of the population. The improvement of the mechanism for forming a strategy for balanced social and economic development by enhancing the role of predictive and analytical work on the preventive detection of imbalances in regional development, recognition of areas that increase the uneven development of the territories, with the aim of timely adjusting managerial decisions for coordinated development of regions is proposed.

Key words: social and economic development, imbalance, disproportions, integration, region, development strategy, indicators of regional development.
