Abstract. In the article the basic contents of the main normative legal acts regulating the process of strategic planning in the Russian Federation are displayed. The questions of planning in the Russian Federation at three levels are in detail analyzed: federal, regional, municipal. The main documents of strategic planning containing the system of the long-term priorities, purposes and tasks of public administration aimed at providing the sustainable and balanced social and economic development of the Russian Federation are analyzed; the main tasks of strategic planning are analyzed, its features, the principles of the organization and functioning, features of formation of long-term and medium-term forecasts of social and economic development which are developed on a variable basis are revealed and are formed in general across the Russian Federation, on the basis of its subjects and by types of the economic activity. The authors showed specifics of informational support of the strategic planning at the federal and regional levels; the documents regulating this process at the level of the territorial subject of the federation on the example of the Volgograd region are displayed. It is noted that according to the federal law on strategic planning the municipalities also develop the documents of strategic planning. In the article the attention is also paid to the questions of development, adjustment, implementation of monitoring and control of the implementation of the forecast of social and economic development of the Russian Federation for a long term and a short term periods is paid.
